I'm not sure if anyone else is aware but it is HOT in Arizona! I walk out the front door and immediately start to feel like I'm being turned into a raisin. Growing up on the east coast did nothing to prepare me for the intensity that is the sun. Not only is it hot but it's dry. This leaves me feeling like I'm chronically dehydrated. I chug water like it's my job but sometimes (like when I'm hiking or at the gym) that's not enough. I used to drink Gatorade but then I checked out the back label. Well I obviously won't be drinking that again. Now I had to find an alternative. Most of the homemade "hydrating drinks" were full of sugar and juices with high fructose corn syrup. Then I came across THIS recipe. By adding a cup of coconut water and some "Just Cranberry" or "Just Cherry" juice, it has turned into one of my favorite at-the-gym drinks.
Ingredients:
1 Cup Coconut water
6 Cups Water
1/4 Cup Juice (cranberry, cherry, orange, or any other kind of juice with no added sugars)
1/4 Cup Lemon Juice (Make sure fresh squeezed lemon is the only ingredient if you're using the pre-made lemon juice)
1 Tbsp Lime Juice (increase this to 2 tbsp if using cherry juice for a yummy cherry limeade flavor!)
1/4 tsp Baking soda
1/2 tsp salt
1/4 cup honey, or 1/4 cup powdered stevia in the raw, or 1/8 tsp powdered stevia
Mix everything together and enjoy! If you're using honey you may have to mix a little longer than you would with the stevia.
Simple as that! If you're using this to hydrate a while while sick, you could even use 1/4 cup Mangosteen in place of the lemon juice. Mangosteen is good for you for a lot of reasons. It's an good source of vitamin C, is a natural anti-inflammatory, and helps fight viral and fungal infections. However, check with your Dr before drinking mangosteen if you're pregnant.
